Recent Space Weather Data from DMSP

The following plots show key Space Weather parameters from recent days obtained from the DMSP spacecraft. The data can be obtained by clicking on the pages for the 'Midnight Boundary Index' and the 'Hemispheric Power'.

Midnight Boundary Index derived from the equatorward boundary of precipitating electrons observed by SSJ4 on DMSP spacecraft and the estimate of the planetary geomagnetic activity index Kp derived from MBI.

Hemispheric Power is the estimate of the total energy flux (ergs/sec=power) of electrons precipitating into the high latitude regions in one hemisphere.

Date when plots were processed

Typically the above plot is 1 to 2 days behind real time. If the date is more than 2 days old or there are blank spots on the plot, there is a problem with the transmission of data to AFRL/VSB. Check again on the next working day to see if the problem has been resolved.

The data storage unit on F12 died on 27 July 2002. A small bit of real time F12 data is being taken but the data samples are quite short (3 - 7 minutes) and the data is quite noisy. Thus AFRL/VSB is not processing any of the F12 data since 27 July 2002.

The F16 Hemispheric Power is computed from preliminary calibration values. In addition, the F16 SSJ5 has a high background counting rate when MeV particles are present. Presently, only a very simple algorithm has been used to account for the background. A better algorithm will be available later.
