This list of awards to CEDAR Community Members started in 2008 in the Community Corner of the CEDAR Post.
URSI August 2008 (from 23 July 2008 SPA Newsletter)
Umran Inan of Stanford has received special recognition for his achievements in space physics and engineering. He will receive an award at the upcoming triennial Assembly of the International Radio Science Union (URSI), to be held in Chicago August 10-15, 2008. Inan will receive the Appleton prize, presented by the Royal Society of London, for "fundamental contributions to understanding of whistler-mode wave-particle inter-action in near-Earth space and the electrodynamic coupling between lightning discharges and the upper atmosphere." COSPAR July 2008 (from 08 July 2008 SPA Newsletter)
The following awards were bestowed by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) at its Scientific Assembly (Montreal, Canada, 13-20 July 2008) to various members of the CEDAR community:
- COSPAR International Cooperation Medal for distinguished contributions to
space science and work that has contributed significantly to the promotion of international scientific cooperation:
- Marvin A. Geller (USA), State University of New York at Stony Brook
- Vikram Sarabhai Medal (a joint award of COSPAR and the Indian Space
Research Organization) honoring Vikram Sarabhai, one of the architects of modern India, for outstanding contributions to space research in developing countries:
- Mangalathayil A. Abdu (Brazil), Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais
(INPE), Sao Jose dos Campos
- Zeldovich Medals (a joint award of COSPAR and the Russian Academy of
Sciences) conferred on young scientists for excellence and achievements, honoring the distinguished astrophysicist Yakov B. Zeldovich. One medal is awarded for each COSPAR Scientific Commission:

Community Corner of March 2008 CEDAR Post
- Congratulations to Tim Killeen for his election to the National Academy of Engineering.
- Congratulations to Jeff Forbes (U CO), Tom Slanger (SRI) and Tony Liu (JHU/APL) for their election to the 2008 class of new AGU Fellows (from 25 January 2008 SPA Newsletter)
- Congratulations to Ronald Woodman for his election as a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences
- Congratulations to Jan Sojka, elected to serve as President-Elect of the space Physics and Aeronomy Section of AGU for the term starting July 1, 2008.
