(2) Solicit 2-3 slides per speaker at C/NOFs-Jicamarca workshop at CEDAR 2009
From Odile De La Beaujardiere (Odile.delaBeaujardiere@hanscom.af.mil).
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to invite contributions to the C/NOFS and Jicamarca workshop at the upcoming CEDAR meeting in Santa-Fe, Jun 29 to Jul 2, 2009. The sessions will focus on the equatorial ionosphere during minima in the solar cycle as it deals with C/NOFS, Jicamarca and the equatorial regions. (See the full session description in the CEDAR website).
The two sessions on Tuesday June 30 1915-2115 and Wednesday July 01 1300-1500 will be held in a workshop (not AGU) style in which each speaker will be allotted time for a 2-3 slides-presentation, in order to ensure enough time for discussion. To encourage this, at least one of the slides should deal with unresolved issues. Speakers are encouraged to end the presentation with outstanding questions, and possible ways to solve them, rather than a summary of what has been accomplished.
We solicit your participation, and need to receive your 2 to 3 slides by June 24, BEFORE the meeting. We will then group them in a logical order, and intertwine a few selected invited talks within the sessions. You can either upload your slides to the CEDAR Wiki, or send them to us as an Email.
As soon as possible or by June 24, please upload to the Wiki or send to the 3 email addresses below the title and the 2-3 slides of your contribution.
David Hysell: dlh37 at cornell.edu

Odile de La Beaujardiere : Odile.delabeaujardiere at hanscom.af.mil
Many thanks,
Koki, David and Odile
PS: Remember: by June 23, to the 3 organizers, 3 slides on how to improve our understanding of the ionosphere-magnetosphere-thermosphere system during solar min in the equatorial regions.
(3) Layered Phenomena in the Mesospause Region (LPMR) Workshop, Stockholm, Sweden, 12-15 July 2009 - abstracts and registrations due 25 May.
From to Jorg Gumbel (gumbel@misu.su.se).
Registration and abstract submission are now open for the 9th International Workshop on Layered Phenomena in the Mesopause Region (LPMR). The workshop will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 12-15, 2009. Registrations and abstracts are due 25 May (less than a week!).
Details about the programme and the location can be found on the workshop website http://www.misu.su.se/lpmr09.
The LPMR goal is to advance the understanding of mesospheric ice clouds and related processes. Workshop topics of particular interest are
- Global observations of NLC/PMC
- Global dynamical coupling processes
- Microphysics and particle charging
- NLC/PMSE particle sizes and shapes
- New lidar and radar developments
- PMSE observations in both hemispheres
- The influx and ablation of meteoric material
- Trends in the mesosphere
More information can be obtained from the workshop website http://www.misu.su.se/lpmr09 or from Jorg Gumbel, gumbel@misu.su.se.
(4) Arecibo call for proposals - due 1 June
From Murray Lewis (blewis@naic.edu).
ARECIBO CALL FOR PROPOSALS
For the trimester starting October 1st 2009:--
(1) The Arecibo deadline for proposals is Monday 1st June, at 11:00pm EST.
(2) A large percentage of the Arecibo telescope time is being used for large surveys. However, we strongly encourage innovative proposals that are not classified as surveys.
(3) The 7 dual-polarization channel, 300 MHz BW, "Mock" spectrometers are available for all of the ALFA consortia. For details see http://www.naic.edu/~astro/mock.shtml
(4) A partial implementation of a NEW MODE for the Jeff Mock spectrometers will be available, which enables all them to be ganged together to provide up to 1 GHz of contiguous spectral coverage. For this call, the implemented functionality only supports a choice for the common bandwidth of all of the spectrometers. It will not support a pulsar folding mode initially.
(5) A 720-820 MHz receiver will be available for use in the band freed up by the analog to digital TV transition. Proposals are encouraged, on a shared risk-basis, subject to the evolution of other occupants of the band, and the realized practicality of using it.
(6) The WAPP spectrometer provides an 8-band dual-polarization, single-pixel observing capability. For receivers that support the bandwidth, this mode can be used to place 8 simultaneous bands of up to 100 MHz bandwidth each within a 1-GHz band as desired. 680 MHz of contiguous spectrum can be covered without filter roll-off effects.
(7) Large proposals are subject to skeptical review after the normal science evaluation. All such proposals in hand will be reviewed during the August following their science evaluation. That usually means that large proposals submitted at the June deadline may *not* make the next skeptical review.
(8) A policy for consortia follow-up proposals has been included as section 5.8 of the web document detailing information about Proposals & Policies, from the link:-- http://www.naic.edu/~astro/proposals/proposal.shtml
Please note that we no longer keep all receivers on the Arecibo telescope permanently cooled and that the 610 MHz receiver is no longer available. The use of the S-high, and C-high receivers will be more restricted, and their use depends on when they are scheduled in campaign mode. S-low is generally kept cold.
------------ Arecibo Observing Information --------------------------
Proposals submitted at the Monday, 1st June, 2009 deadline are for using the telescope in the eight months beginning 1st October 2009 (ie valid for two trimesters).
Proposal submission details, and a web-based cover sheet, can be found at http://www.naic.edu/~astro/proposals. A guide for new-users to the telescope is at http://www.naic.edu/~astro/guide. Other user-related information is at http://www.naic.edu/~astro/astronomy.htm.
Radio sources with declinations between about -1 and +37.5 deg are visible from Arecibo, and can be tracked over the range of zenith angles between ~1.1 and 19.7 deg.
Available receivers in the (frequency-agile) Gregorian Dome, their frequency coverage, typical System Temperature, Telescope Gain and System Equivalent Flux Density (SEFD = Tsys(K)/Telescope_Gain(K/Jy)) presently are:
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rx-name Freq[.] coverage Tsys (K) Gain (K/Jy) SEFD (Jy) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 327 312 -- 342 MHz (50) + Tsky 10.5 >7.5 800 720 -- 820 MHz 70 10 CH430 425 -- 435 MHz 60 + Tsky 20 430Gr 422 -- 442 MHz 50 + Tsky 11 5 ALFA 1225 - 1525 MHz 30 10 L-wide 1.15 - 1.73 GHz 25 - 40 9 - 11 2.4 S-low 1.8 - 3.1 GHz 32 8 3.4 S-radar 2.33 - 2.43 GHz 25 10 2.5 S-high 3.0 - 4.0 GHz 31 - 37 7 - 10 3.3 C 3.85 - 6.0 GHz 25 - 30 4 - 8.5 3 (5 GHz) C-high 5.9 - 8.1 GHz 26 - 29 2.5 - 7.5 5 (6.9 GHz) X 7.8 - 10.2 GHz 28 - 32 2.0 - 5.5 7.5 (9 GHz) ----------------------------------------------------------------------
To these receivers should be added the 47 and 430-MHz systems in the Carriage House.
Pulsar, spectral-line, VLBI, and continuum backends are available to exploit all receivers. An overview of the present capabilities of the WAPP backend, the autocorrelation spectrometer used for both spectral-line and pulsar observing, is to be found at http://www2.naic.edu/~wapp/
The Arecibo Mk-5A disc-based recorder for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is available for use with the VLBA, HSA, EVN and Global networks at all bands up to 10 GHz. Those wishing to include the ultra-high sensitivity of Arecibo in their VLBI observations should submit proposals directly to these networks rather than to Arecibo, but include special justification for the use of the 305-m telescope. The maximum data recording rate at Arecibo is 1 Gbps. However, HSA observations are limited to a maximum data rate of 512 Mbps. eVLBI runs with the EVN have been tested successfully up to 512 Mbps.
The Mk-5A system is also available for single-dish baseband-sampled data recording.
