Job in Experimental Upper Atmospheric Space Science at Virginia Tech - reviews start 15 Jul
As part of a new National Science Foundation NSF funded space science initiative at Virginia Tech, the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position in experimental upper atmospheric space science. All ranks will be considered. The successful candidate will become a key member of a planned interdisciplinary center for space research, and participate in establishing a premiere upper atmospheric space science program by developing a vigorous funded research program and a specialized graduate curriculum. A generous startup package for establishing an experiment program will be provided. A PhD and research experience in space physics or a related field is required. The candidate is expected to have expertise in either space based (e.g. satellite or sounding rocket) or ground based (e.g. radar, lidar, optical, GPS) instrumentation. Prior experience in the role of PI or Co-I on space missions would be advantageous. The candidate will also interact with and/or hold joint appointments in other engineering or science departments at Virginia Tech.
The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has 70 faculty members and research expenditures of approximately $30 million annually. The ECE Department has an endowment in excess of $13 million. A top priority of the endowment is the support of outstanding graduate students. The Department currently enrolls approximately 900 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The College of Engineering also operates the Alexandria Research Institute (ARI) which focuses on the development and deployment of information technology. The ARI is located near the large industry cluster in Arlington, Crystal City, and Washington, DC, and a large number of important federal agencies.
