Job as Chair of Dept of Physics and Astronomy, U. TX at San Antonio
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is seeking a dynamic leader to be the departmental chair starting Fall 2007, pending budgetary approval. The department presently has 9 faculty members, offerings B.A., B.S., M.S.., degrees in Physics, and a joint Ph.D. program with the Space Science and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). The candidate should be able to provide strong leadership and guidance to the department and the joint program with SwRI as it grows under the University Strategic Plan in all areas of academic endeavor. The department chairchairman will be appointed at the tenured professor level.
Required qualifications: a Ph.D. in physics, or astronomy or closely related areaa closely related field; an active research program; with a distinguished publication record of and an internationally recognized scholarly research reputation. and of obtaining external funding.
Preferred qualifications: excellence in teaching at all levels including PhD; administrative experience; and a research program in an area such as experimental or computational biophysics, condensed matter physics, advanced materials physics, computational physics, optics or astrophysics.
Responsibilities include a commitment to developing the growing Physics program, teaching, supervising research students at all levels, and maintaining an externally funded research program. UTSA, the second largest component university of The University of Texas System, has an enrollment in excess of 28,000 students and offers courses at the Loop 1604 and Downtown Campuses. SwRI plays a key leadership role in NASA's space physics and planetary missions, provides flight instrument design and fabrication, and data systems development. PhD students have access to SwRI's world-class facilities that include plasma calibration and MEMS laboratories.
