Space Weather S/W Engineer in CISM at U of Colorado, Boulder
The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado at Boulder is seeking a person with software engineering expertise to join our team working in the Center for Integrated Space weather Modeling (CISM), an NSF-sponsored Science and Technology Center (STC). CISM is developing end-to-end models of the connected Sun-Earth system in order to characterize and forecast space weather conditions in geospace. CISM works in close partnership with the Space Environment Center (SEC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder, as well as with the U.S. Air Force Weather Agency, the U.S. Air Force Space Command, and the NASA-led Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC).
The primary responsibility for the person in this position will be to transition selected models from the CISM research environment into the NOAA Space Environment Center for evaluation in an operational environment. The successful applicant will work cooperatively with members of the CISM model development team and with SEC forecasters and scientists to assure that CISM-developed models are transferred effectively to SEC (and other operations partners), and will assist with developing visualization and analysis tools to aid SEC's evaluation of the models. The incumbent will be expected to be resident in Boulder, CO, spending most time in the SEC facilities and/or the LASP research facilities.
Candidates for this position should have demonstrated experience in software engineering. Particularly important is familiarity with a major programming language (such as FORTRAN, C/C++), scripting language (e.g., shell, Perl), and high-level analysis and visualization tools (such as Matlab or IDL). Experience in computing on Unix workstations and distributed computing is desirable. Familiarity with solar-terrestrial science, including an understanding of space weather issues, is also desired.
Interested parties should send a brief resume and names of three potential references to Dr. Daniel Baker, CISM Knowledge Transfer Co-Director, LASP, Campus Box 590, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309 (daniel.baker@lasp.colorado.edu).
