Endowed Chair and Director, CSPAR, University of Alabama at Huntsville

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is seeking a senior scientist to occupy the Pei-Ling Chan Chair in the Department of Physics and to direct the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research (CSPAR) at the University. The successful candidate will be a world-class scholar and researcher in space science/astrophysics, contribute effectively to the Departments undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, actively supervise physics graduate students for the Ph.D. degree, and provide leadership to continue the development of CSPAR into a nationally recognized research center in space science. We are particularly interested in increasing collaboration and interaction between CSPAR and the University's academic units, especially the Department of Physics. The CSPAR Director reports to the VP for Research.

The present research strengths of the Department of Physics are concentrated in optics, astrophysics, solar physics, and space plasma physics. Other strong research areas at UAH include biotechnology, information technology, propulsion, atmospheric science, and several engineering disciplines.

UAH is one of three institutions in the University of Alabama System, with a current enrollment of approximately 5500 undergraduates and 1500 graduate students. Federally supported research expenditures exceed $55 million per year.

Huntsville is strategically located in the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama and is the home of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the Army's Redstone Arsenal, and a large number of private-sector research companies. The National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC), located on the UAH campus, contains researchers from universities, Marshall Space Flight Center, and private companies (such as USRA). The NSSTC is designed to provide critical masses of researchers and support personnel in a number of areas including atmospheric science, astrophysics, space science, biotechnology, information technology, optics, materials science, and propulsion. The City of Huntsville is rich in cultural and recreational activities, and enjoys one of the highest per-capita incomes in the country. The population of the metropolitan area is approximately 375,000. For more information about UAH and Huntsville, Alabama, please visit http://www.uah.edu and http://www.ci.huntsville.al.us.
