IPY Post-doc at University of Saskatchewan, Canada

Studies of Atmospheric Coupling Processes during the IPY 2007-9: Post-Doctoral Fellow at ISAS, University of Saskatchewan, CANADA

The Atmospheric Dynamics Group within the Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies (ISAS) requires a PDF for an IPY program (2007-9). The program is imbedded within CANDAC-PEARL science, in particular 'Waves and Coupling Processes.' [http://www.candac.ca, http://www.usask/physics/isas (research themes)]. The person hired will be largely resident at ISAS-UofS, but also associated with the CANDAC PEARL staff/scientists, and may expect to spend time/collaborate at York and UNB universities with other Co-Is.

The Arctic atmosphere is linked dynamically and thence chemically with both the Equatorial regions (through the QBO, and ENSO) and the Antarctic atmosphere. Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSW) and winter vortices will be studied at Eureka-80N CANDAC-PEARL and other Polar sites, during the IPY and its Arctic- Antarctic winters/summers. Assessment of the roles of observed planetary wave fields, gravity waves, and winds, along with aeronomical and chemical characteristics will be involved.

Data from the radar and optical systems of CANDAC-PEARL and other Canadian sites, from hemispheric networks and satellites (e.g. ACE, TIMED, Odin-OSIRIS, Aura), along with assimilated dynamical and chemical data/fields (MetO, CMAM, GEM, NCEP/NCAR), are to be analyzed using a variety of sophisticated spectral methods (e.g. complex wavelets, hemispheric wave-number analyses). The Q-diagnostic, stream function, and potential vorticity will be available from ISAS-colleagues for characterization of the polar vortices during the winters and summers of 2007-2009.

The candidate chosen will be capable of archiving and analyzing data from the above systems; advanced analysis and interpretation skills; developing collaborations with other scientists, globally; and organizing, leading and writing advanced research papers. The initial appointment will be for one year, and extensions during IPY will be depend upon performance during the first year.

Please contact Professor Alan Manson, ISAS Chairman, University of Saskatchewan: (alan.manson@usask.ca). Candidates are expected to submit a letter of interest and experience [up to 3 pages] along with a CV, and the names and addresses of three persons for letters of reference. Applications are required as soon as possible, and selection will occur by the end of August, with starting date soon thereafter.

All the universities involved in CANDAC are committed to Employment Equity. Members of designated groups (women, aboriginal people, people with disabilities and visible minorities) are encouraged to self-identify on their applications. For Post-Doctoral Fellowship positions, Canadian immigration regulations require preference be given to Canadians and permanent residents of Canada who meet the advertisement's requirements.
