Post-doctoral and Ph.D. Space Physics Positions at the University of Saskatchewan, CANADA
The Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies (ISAS) at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications from candidates interested in Postdoctoral or Ph.D. research positions in space physics. The scientific research primarily involves high latitude radio observations, including the SuperDARN network of HF coherent radars (http://superdarn.jhuapl.edu/), and the polar network of CADI (Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde) ionosondes (http://cadiweb.physics.uwo.ca/). The new polar cap SuperDARN (PolarDARN) radar at Rankin Inlet is currently operational, and the second PolarDARN radar at Inuvik is under construction and is expected to be operational by the end of 2007.
Advanced data analysis and interpretation skills are required, as other instruments, both ground-based and on satellites, will be used in the analysis where possible. The University of Saskatchewan SuperDARN/CADI research group is part of the Canadian GeoSpace Monitoring array of ground-based instruments (http://www.cgsm.ca/). Data from satellite instruments, particularly those on the upcoming e-POP (enhanced Polar Outflow Probe) satellite, will also be of interest (http://mertensiana.phys.ucalgary.ca/). The fields of view of the new PolarDARN radars have significant overlap with the viewing area of AMISR and the Polar Cap Observatory at Resolute Bay, and collaborative research is expected. We also anticipate significant collaboration with THEMIS research starting in the first tail season, as the THEMIS conjunction meridian is located in west-central Canada.
Research topics of interest to the group include global convection, magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, magnetic reconnection, substorms, field-aligned currents, polar cap dynamics, ionospheric structures, travelling ionospheric disturbances, plasma physics, and radio propagation studies.
The PDF position is intended to last two years, but employment in the second year will depend on progress made in the first year. Experience in space science studies and in the use of radars will be an asset.
Information about Ph.D. programs at the University of Saskatchewan is available from the College of Graduate Studies and Research (http://www.usask.ca/cgsr/).
Applicants should send a cover letter with a statement of research interests and experience, as well as a curriculum vitae including the names and addresses of three references, by either email (adobe pdf format) or regular post to:
