Space Physics Job at U of CA, Riverside - due 1 Nov
The Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at the University of California, Riverside invites highly qualified individuals to apply for an assistant professor faculty position in computational space physics. The position is a 100% tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in the Department of Physics and a complementary 5-year 1/3 Professional Research Scientist position in the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, which is renewable. The 1/3 Professional Research (PR) Scientist position provides 1 quarter of academic teaching relief per year for the duration of the PR position. The position can be filled as early as January 1, 2007. The Department and IGPP are seeking outstanding candidates with the potential for exceptional research and excellence in teaching. The successful candidate is expected to establish an outstanding, well-funded research program involving graduate students, post-doctoral scientists, and professional researchers, and to contribute to department teaching at all levels. The IGPP and the Department of Physics are experiencing significant growth in the research areas of (i) computational space physics and the modeling of astrophysical plasma flows and (ii) solar energetic particles. The Department and the IGPP currently have very strong computational research groups in the area of large-scale heliospheric modeling, interplanetary turbulence, particle acceleration throughout the heliosphere, and the physics of the solar wind. We are seeking outstanding candidates who, while augmenting and complementing our current strengths in these areas, will have a focus on (i) large-scale modeling of the heliosphere, including cosmic ray physics, and (ii) the modeling of solar energetic particle events and particle radiation in the interplanetary medium. Our programs are well funded by both NASA and the NSF and the successful applicants are expected to bring corresponding support for their own research program(s). Data from spacecraft such as Voyager, Ulysses, ACE, Wind and Hubble, amongst others, are used in our research programs and we would expect that the successful applicants would similarly draw from and add to this effort. Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physics, astrophysics or a related field. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and level of appointment. Candidates should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching skills, and evidence of an outstanding research program and/or a brief description of their research plans (no more than 2 pages). They should also arrange to have three letters of reference sent to the Department and be willing to submit additional references on request. Letters should be sent to:

Full review of applications will begin November 1, 2006. Applications received after this date will be considered on a case-by-case basis until the position is filled.
