Lecturer in (Space) Physics at University of Otago, New Zealand - due 1 Sep

University of Otago (Dunedin, New Zealand), Department of Physics, Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Confirmation Path)

The Department of Physics of the University of Otago has a position available which is highly relevant to the SPA community. As noted in the advertisement (copied below), applicants are preferred who can support the current strengths of the Department, including the Space Physics Research Group. Individuals who are active in magnetospheric/radiation belt and/or lower ionospheric research may like to follow-up this advertisement.

The Space Physics Group's main research thrust is energy coupling between regions in Geospace, to understand the impacts on the Earth system. We have a long history of applying Very Low Frequency (VLF) techniques to such coupling problems, but are expanding into the combination of multiple experimental and theoretical techniques to understand Geospace. The Otago group are co-PIs of the joint NZ/UK lead Antarctic-Arctic Radiation-belt (Dynamic) Deposition VLF Atmospheric Research Konsortium (AARDDVARK) sensor network, aimed at long range remote sensing of lower ionospheric disturbances, particularly those due to energetic particle precipitation, solar flares and lightning. The group is also a core-member of the real-time World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN).

Applications are invited for the position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics. Preference will be given to applicants whose research supports one or more of the Department.s current strengths in ultra-cold atoms, laser physics, geophysics (space, atmosphere, polar oceans) and electronics.

Candidates should have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in teaching and research, and show potential for research leadership and success in competitive research funding. The appointee, who should hold a PhD in Physics, will be expected to contribute strongly to the Department's teaching programme. This is a confirmation path appointment, similar to US tenure track. The University may elect to make more than one appointment.
