We seek applicants to fill up to four new positions for Scientist I or Research Engineer I at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Candidates will be expected to submit:
- a statement of research interest,
- a curriculum vitae, and
- a list of referees from whom we may expect letters of recommendation.
Applicants will be evaluated based on their accomplishments and their potential to become leaders in areas relevant to the NCAR mission.
If you are a recent Ph.D. scientist or Ph.D. research engineer with interest in atmospheric or Earth-Sun system processes, and you are ready for a challenging scientific career, we'd like to hear from you.
Duties Include:
We seek to fill up to four new positions for entry-level scientists and research engineers. We particularly seek applicants with expertise well-matched to the following priority areas:
- Improving understanding of the atmosphere, the Earth system, and the Sun through:
- explorations of variability and change;
- investigations of the interactions of the atmosphere, the broader Earth system, and human society;
- improvements to predictions of weather, climate, and other atmospheric phenomena; and
- collaborative development of community models.
- Increasing societal resilience to weather, climate, and other atmospheric hazards by:
- investigating weather and climate information needs and decision-making,
- building capacity for coping with weather and climate hazards,
- establishing connections with developing-nation researchers, and
- supporting and conducting regional-scale investigations of climate and weather.
- Providing robust, accessible, and innovative information services and tools by:
- enhancing capability and capacity of NCAR supercomputing;
- developing and providing advanced services and tools;
- conducting computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, and numerical methods research; and
- creating an Earth system knowledge environment.
- Providing world-class ground, airborne, and space-borne observational facilities and services that:
- enable innovative field experiments and measurement campaigns,
- develop new instrumentation, and
- realize the installment and operations of the initial instrument suite on the new NSF/NCAR HIAPER aircraft.
Requirements Include:
- Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. Degree in Atmospheric or related science; or
- Ph.D. Degree in electrical, optical, mechanical or aeronautical engineering.
- Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Scientific/Engineering and leadership skills to develop and coordinate research programs.
- Demonstrated excellence and productivity in scientific or engineering research, as evidenced in refereed scientific or engineering journals.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective scientific collaborations inside and outside the organization.
- Ability to write scientific or engineering manuscripts and present results in seminars and conferences.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Advanced skills in areas needed for the selected research area(s).
- Ability to write proposals for research opportunities and to manage awarded projects.
- Commitment to the value of a work environment that is culturally diverse and involves varied scientific disciplines and approaches.
