Location: Holmbury St. Mary, Dorking, UK.
The UCL/MSSL Planetary Science Group has a vacancy for a post-doctoral scientist (initially for 1 year) to join our team which is actively engaged in exploiting data from the Venus Express mission. We are European lead co-investigator group for the electron spectrometer, part of the ASPERA-4 instrument. The successful applicant will be engaged in analysis studies of the Venus environment and its interaction with the solar wind. He/she will join an active team working on ASPERA-4 ELS science and operations. He/she would most likely participate in collaborations both within and outside of the MSSL group. We would also expect him/her to take the lead in defining and pursuing some of their own research goals, e.g. using Mars Express ASPERA-3 data. The minimum qualification, which should be obtained before taking up the post, is a Ph.D. in physical sciences, preferably in planetary magnetospheres, space plasma physics or a related area. Experience in space plasmas data analysis in general, or planetary magnetospheric physics in particular, is desirable.
MSSL is a multi-disciplinary laboratory, with a long track record in the design, build, operation and exploitation of space and astrophysics instrumentation. As well as Venus Express, we have provided or had involvement with charged particle instrumentation for Cassini-Huygens, Giotto, Mars Express, Venus Express, Cluster, Double Star, Polar, CRRES, AMPTE and GEOS. The successful applicant will also be able to get involved in scientific studies leading to prospective MSSL involvement in future missions.
