Post-Doc in Saturn's magnetosphere at JHU/Applied Physics Lab, MD
Magnetospheric Physics Research Position. The Space Physics Group of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) has an opening for a Post-Doctoral Fellow or Research Associate in Outer Planets Magnetospheric Physics.
The successful applicant will participate in the analysis of energetic ion, electron, and neutral atom measurements of Saturn's magnetosphere with the Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) team on the Cassini spacecraft. The position will require an understanding of magnetospheric physics, energetic particle dynamics, gas-plasma interactions, and basic sensor concepts. The applicant must be able to code in IDL, and preferably also in another language such as C, C++, Java, and/or Fortran. Applicants should be able to demonstrate skills in data analysis and in writing for publication in refereed journals. An understanding of energetic neutral atom imaging and a background in outer planet magnetospheres would all be considered strong additions to the qualifications for this position.
The APL Space Physics Group has a broad and active basic research program that includes data analysis, theory and modeling studies of the Earth's magnetosphere and Sun-Earth connections, of other planetary magnetospheres, and of Heliospheric and Solar Physics. We have significant development programs in space instrumentation and mission design. Currently, active missions include Cassini, TWINS, New Horizons, Geotail, ACE, Messenger, Ulysses, Voyager 1 and 2, Venus Express, and Mars Express. Approved future missions include JUNO, MMS and RBSP.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field by the appointment date, or have an equivalent combination of demonstrated experience and education. The position would be at the level of Post-Doctoral Fellow or Research Associate, depending on experience and qualifications.
Interested candidates should send a curriculum vitae that contains a publication list, a letter discussing their qualifications, research interests, and goals, and the names of three professional references to Bryant Garcia, The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, 11100 Johns Hopkins Road, Laurel, MD 20723-6099; FAX: 240-228-6810; Email: recruiter4@jhuapl.edu. Inquiries regarding the Cassini/MIMI position should be directed to Donald G. Mitchell, telephone 240-228-5981, Fax: 240-228-0386 or Email: Donald.G.Mitchell@jhuapl.edu The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is an equal opportunity affirmative action employer.
