Positions in 3-D optical turbulence forecast above astronomical sites - due 1 Mar
Positions will be available this year in the context of the new research group:
'3D Optical Turbulence Forecast above Astronomical Sites' (FOROT)
led by Elena Masciadri and funded by a Marie Curie Excellence Grant. The positions are of different nature (PhD and Post Doc) and time scale. The work will take place at the Astrophysics Observatory of Arcetri in Florence (Italy).
One more positions for PhDs will be available starting in 2006. Applications are due 1 March 2006.
The project is centered on a multidisciplinary topic that is the simulation and forecast of the optical turbulence for astronomical applications. The atmospheric turbulence (known as 'optical turbulence' among astronomers) is, indeed, a problem for astronomers due to the fact that it affects the quality of images obtained from ground-based observations.
The tools and the methodology that we plan to employ for this project are quite familiar to people moving in the field of the physics of the atmosphere. I think, in particular, to people with competences in the modelization of the turbulence and development of codes. An atmospherical model at meso-scale is planned to be employed.
The project will be centered in particular on the two sites:
- Mt. Graham (Arizona) site of the interferometer Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) - two 8 m telescopes in the visible and near-infrared
- Antarctica (Dome C, South Pole and Dome A), potential site for Extremley Large Telescopes
Thanks to a special italian law, aiming to exhort and favour the incoming of qualified scientists in the country, researchers coming from a foreign country with at least 2 years of activity in a foreign Research Institute, will take advantage of a reduction of taxes if they will be 'fiscal resident'.
The positions are posted in the web address:
