Inst of Space and Atmos Studies (ISAS) U Sask Postdoc, Canada - due 31 Jan
It is anticipated that there will be a Post Doctroal Fellowship (PDF) available, starting in the summer/fall of 2006, in the Atmospheric Dynamics Group of the Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies (ISAS), which is a Research Unit within the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Canada.
The person receiving this particular PDF, within the Atmospheric Dynamics Group, will study vertical and inter-hemispheric coupling in the stratosphere-mesosphere region of the Earth atmosphere. Data from radar and optical networks, including radars in Canada (e.g. Saskatoon, Resolute Bay, Eureka-PEARL), satellites (TOMS, TIMED, Odin-OSIRIS) along with assimilated data fields (MetO, NCEP/NCAR) are to be analyzed using a variety of sophisticated spectral methods (wavelet, global wave-number analyses). Understanding of the operation of radar, optical and satellite systems is an advantage. Such parameters as the Q-diagnostic (measure of relative contribution of strain and rotation in the wind field), stream function, and potential vorticity are to be calculated for characterization of the Northern and Southern Hemisphere's vortex evolution during the winters and summers of 2005-2008. These activities are part of International Programs: CAWSES (Climate And Weather of the Sun Earth System) of SCOSTEP, and the IPY.
Other major atmospheric sciences research themes in ISAS involve these: chemistry and physics of the terrestrial middle and lower atmospheres, including production and loss mechanisms for environmentally important molecules; dynamics of the middle atmosphere including measurements of waves, turbulence, related airglow parameters and studies of chemical transport; issues of Climate Change. Research activities in ISAS are based upon a diverse set of observational systems, including networks of ground-based radars and optical devices, and satellite-systems. Modelling activities are increasingly important. ISAS programs are International, collaborative and strongly linked to the Canadian Space Agency. http://www.usask.ca/physics/isas/: Odin-OSIRIS, SuperDARN, CAWSES, ILWS, CEDAR, SPARC.
Interested persons should contact the ISAS Chair, also leader of the Atmospheric Dynamics Group, before January 31st 2006: include a CV (less than 6 pages); a brief summary (2 pages) of research interests, experience and skills; and ability (1 page) to complement the Atmospheric Dynamics Group's program described above.
