Science Planner/Operations Engineer Position at Imperial College, London, UK - due 28 Feb

Imperial College is the Principal Investigator institute for the Magnetometer (MAG) instrument aboard the Cassini spacecraft, currently in orbit about the planet Saturn. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Science Planner / Operations Engineer to assist the team who are responsible for planning the observations of the MAG instrument, preparing the required spacecraft telecommands, and monitoring the instrument's health and safety. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to provide planning resources, such as spacecraft trajectory and orientation information, in order to support the science of MAG co-investigators and the future planning activities for the Cassini extended mission. From time to time, the post will also require participation in activities related to the distribution and calibration of the magnetometer data. You will work in a multi-faceted role, as part of a successful international operations team. You will be required to represent the MAG team at teleconferences related to instrument operations and science planning. You will also be required to occasionally attend international Cassini project / science meetings (once or twice per year on average).

You will preferably have an undergraduate degree (or MSc) in computer science, physics or other numerate discipline. You will have highly developed numerate and literary skills, and good communication skills. You should also preferably have some experience in procedural computer programming, computer graphics packages and preparation of electronic documents. The ability to work as part of a team and independently, and the ability to collaborate and liaise with teams of planning engineers and scientists are essential.

The post is available from April 1st, 2007, for two years in the first instance with a possibility of extension, subject to funding. The Salary will be in the range �23,850 - �27,240 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
