Plasma Experimentalist Job at NASA Goddard, MD - due 18 Apr

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Heliophysics Science Division, invites applications for a civil service appointment at the mid-career to senior level, in the area of space plasma diagnostics. We welcome applicants with strong science background and skills in the established techniques, and the potential to develop pioneering new techniques for time-resolved velocity analysis of space plasmas, including composition. The successful applicant will have research experience and interests including one or more of the following science areas: planetary magnetospheres and their interaction with the solar wind; plasma heating and particle acceleration; ionospheric configuration, redistribution and response to solar wind interactions; solar wind origins, acceleration, and expansion to the heliopause.

Strong interest in and experience with research collaborations and project interactions across geospace, heliospheric, and solar physics disciplines is desirable. The successful applicant will lead the development of the Space Plasma Instrument Facility in the Laboratory for Geospace Physics. The laboratory and facility have as their goals the development and deployment of advanced techniques for the diagnosis of space plasmas in contexts where full spatio-temporal resolution with velocity analysis is the key to understanding fundamental processes, such as particle acceleration, reconnection, and turbulence.

The Heliophysics Science Division also includes Space Weather, Heliospheric Physics, and Solar Physics laboratories. For further information about the Heliophysics Science Division, please visit http://hsd.gsfc.nasa.gov

The appointment will be made via the civil service system, at a compensation level commensurate with the selected applicant's qualifications and experience. US citizenship or the intent to become a US citizen is required. Applicants should submit a cover letter with statement of employment objectives, CV, and the names and contact data, including e-mail, of three references, to michael.w.horn at nasa.gov (PDF format preferred). Applications should be received by 18 April 2008 to receive full consideration.

"Goddard Space Flight Center is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of it staff. It welcomes nominations of and applications from women and minority group members, as well as others who would bring additional dimensions to the Center's research, mission development, and service missions."
