GOES-R Energetic Particle Scientist/Software Developer in Boulder, CO

From Terry Onsager (Terry.Onsager@noaa.gov)

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) invites applications for a GOES-R Energetic Particle Scientist/Software Developer. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and testing algorithms for the generation of new products and for establishing calibration and validation schemes for the sensors that will be flown on the next generation of NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-R). The GOES-R satellites will continue the GOES heritage in space weather by carrying instruments to sense the local /in situ/ environment (magnetometer and particle sensors) as well as the sun (X-ray sensor, EUV sensor, and EUV imager). The new algorithms could include: a specification of the radiation belt electron flux at all locations in geostationary orbit; a specification of the radiation belt electron fluxes extending to low altitudes and providing information for satellites in MEO, LEO, and for the International Space Station; a specification of the solar energetic particle flux throughout the outer magnetosphere; a specification of the fluid moments of the low- and medium-energy electron and proton fluxes; and a specification of the heavy ion flux spectra. These algorithms are intended to lead to new products and services to be used in space weather operations. The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in space physics or a related field. Desired experience includes familiarity with the magnetospheric particle and magnetic field environment, experience developing and documenting algorithms for processing satellite data, and the ability to communicate effectively and to work independently as well as in teams. Externally funded independent research could be undertaken in support of the GOES-R algorithm development. Further information is available at: http://cires.colorado.edu/jobs/
