Doctoral Student Opportunity in Space Plasma Physics at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Helsinki, Finland - start 1 Aug

The Finnish Meteorological Institute is seeking a doctoral student to undertake research in the areas of space plasma physics and the dynamics of the terrestrial magnetosphere and ionosphere.

The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with the Space Physics Research group in the current research areas including the magnetosphere energy transfer processes. The postholder will be expected to perform and evaluate simulation runs using our 3D global MHD model and to analyse and interpret spaceborne and ground-based observational datasets.

Previous experience with magnetospheric physics from either global modelling or through observational data analysis would be desirable. Familiarity with C/C++ and LINUX would be an advantage.

The position is funded by the Academy of Finland, with a target of a doctoral dissertation, which is typically a four-year project in Finland. The position is available from 1 August 2008, for a year, with a possibility for upto 3 years extension upon yearly performance and funding. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
