Postdoc in Space Plasma Physics at Dartmouth - due Apr 15
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position in Space Plasma Physics at Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering. Funding for this position for up to three years is expected under NASA's Cluster Guest Investigator Program, entitled Modeling, Theory, and Enhanced Data Analysis Tools. The project involves the development and benchmarking with simulated data of several advanced data analysis tools. These tools will then be used in Cluster event studies, with data taken in the magnetopause region and elsewhere. Included is Grad-Shafranov reconstruction (e.g., GRL, L11803, June 16, 2004) of approximately two- dimensional magnetic structures, such as FTEs, flux ropes, and reconnection configurations, and also reconstruction of flow and density structures associated with the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the low- latitude boundary layer. New methods for deriving magnetopause normal directions, and also invariant-axis orientations of various nearly two- dimensional structures, will be developed and used in Cluster event studies. An important objective of the project is to evolve the data analysis tools to user-friendly forms that can be exported to other research groups.
Familiarity with Matlab or IDL and good numerical as well as mathematical skills are needed.
If you are interested in this position or want more information, please contact Bengt Sonnerup (sonnerup@dartmouth.edu; phone number 603 646 2883) as soon as possible. Complete applications, including CV as well as names and e-mail addresses of two references, should be sent in by April 15. The mailing address is
