Job to develop a laser radar at Dalhousie Univ, Canada - due starting 5 Sep

The Atmospheric-Optics Laboratory at Dalhousie University is searching for an engineer or applied physicist to oversee the development of an atmospheric lidar (laser radar) system. The lidar will be used for climate research in the High Arctic, and is part of the new Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC). He/she will work closely with our industrial collaborators, and will be responsible for interfacing the various lidar subsystems to obtain instrument functionality. Candidates should have a practical understanding of optics, electronics, and computer programming, and have excellent communication skills. Advanced degrees in Engineering or Physics, and laboratory experience will be considered assets.

Applicants should submit their resume and two letters of reference by email (tom.duck@dal.ca), regular mail, or by fax (902-494-5191) to Dr. Thomas J. Duck, Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3H 3J5. This is a contract position and it is expected to last for 24 months. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, and the review process will begin 5 September 2005.

The Atmospheric-Optics Laboratory at Dalhousie University is dedicated to the design, construction and use of lidar systems for studies of planetary atmospheres. The Laboratory is currently operating a lidar constructed in Halifax for measurements of pollution, and is playing a key role on the Phoenix Mars Scout Science Team which will place a lidar on Mars in 2008. Dr. Duck is a co-founder of CANDAC, and is the leader of the Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Theme. For more information on Atmospheric-Optics Laboratory activities, please see http://aolab.phys.dal.ca/.
