Space Weather Remote Sensing Project Scientist I (8102) at the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology Ionosphere Climate (COSMIC) Program, at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colorado

Basic Job Function: Maintains and improves the analysis of space weather data from GPS radio occultation, the Tiny Ionospheric Photometer, and Tri-Band Beacon at the COSMIC program office. Ensures timely delivery of high-quality products to data users and develops validation methods for the space weather products. Support satellite mission operations at COSMIC. Supports science users of the COSMIC data and data products. Conducts collaborative and independent science investigations on the application of the COSMIC data to space weather. Supports operational users of COSMIC space weather products at NOAA, USAF and elsewhere. Represents the COSMIC programs space weather activities at conferences and meetings. Publishes scientific papers. Stays informed on new developments in the field relevant to the use of COSMIC data for space weather.

Duties Include: Improves COSMIC Data Analysis and Archive Center's (CDAAC's) space weather analysis system - algorithm development; inverts, analyzes, and combines data from satellite payloads if necessary for extraction of total electron content (TEC), electron density profiles, ionospheric scintillation, etc. Software for operational near-real time and post-processing analysis must be developed and expanded based on existing software. Develops data validation and Quality Control methods; evaluates results; identifies, debugs and develops creative solutions to processing problems of a complex analysis system. Community support, outreach, represents the COSMIC program's space weather activities at conferences and meetings, researches and publishes papers, participates in proposals for outside funding; contribute to scientific progress reports. Understands and maintains the space weather data analysis at the COSMIC Data Analysis and Archive Center (CDAAC); serves as COSMIC lead technical resource for space weather; develops and coordinates space weather operations for program; Conducts collaborative and independent science investigations on the application of the COSMIC data to space weather. Supports the COSMIC operations team; supports operational users of COSMIC space weather products at NOAA, USAF and elsewhere. Operations support involves monitoring and trouble shooting the automated CDAAC data processing and scientific payloads. This activity is shared with others in the CDAAC team.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Geophysics, Mathematics, Atmospheric Science, Aerospace Engineering or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Experience with high accuracy dual frequency GPS data
  • Knowledge of and interest in the ionosphere and space weather
  • Experience publishing peer-reviewed papers
  • Highest skill in mathematics.
  • Strong programming skills in Fortran, C, Perl.
  • Knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team member in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to write scientific manuscripts and present results in seminars and conferences.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective scientific collaborations inside and outside organization.
  • Demonstrated excellence and productivity in scientific research, as evidenced in refereed journal and conference publications.
  • Ability to write proposals for research opportunities.

Desired, but not required:

  • Understanding of the radio occultation inversion techniques.
  • Use of high accuracy GPS software package (i.e., Bernese, GIPSY, GAMIT) .

This is a full-time two-year term position with possibility of extension. Relocation Benefits Not Offered. Initial consideration will be given to applications received prior to Friday, August 15, 2008. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.
