CIRES/WCD job in Atmospheric Numerical Modeling, Boulder, CO

The ionosphere and upper atmosphere group of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado in Boulder is involved in an ambitious project to develop a comprehensive general circulation model (GCM) of Integrated Dynamics through Earth's Atmosphere (IDEA). The project is sponsored by the NASA Sun-Earth Connection Theory program and is conducted in cooperation with the National Weather Service's Environmental Modeling and Space Environment Centers. The IDEA model consists of a 'whole atmosphere' GCM extending from the surface to the exosphere and coupled with a plasmasphere-ionosphere module. This position is part of CIRES Weather and Climate Dynamics (WCD) Division located in Boulder, Colorado.

Requirements

  • Recent Ph.D. recipients in atmospheric, physical or computer sciences and other related disciplines or those who anticipate obtaining a doctoral degree in the fall of 2006 are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • A working knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, chemistry, or radiation in the middle and upper atmosphere is required.
  • Practical experience with global-scale numerical models and in development and modification of large FORTRAN codes in massively parallel environments (MPI and OpenMP) is highly desirable.

CIRES offers a comprehensive benefits package and Boulder provides a stimulating working environment for fruitful interactions with colleagues at national labs, private companies, and the University of Colorado. The position is available immediately and the initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of extension depending on demonstrated progress and availability of funding. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Informal inquiries may be directed to Drs. Rashid Akmaev (Rashid.Akmaev@noaa.gov) and Timothy Fuller-Rowell (Tim.Fuller-Rowell@noaa.gov).

The position will be filled at CIRES as a Research Associate at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The University offers an attractive benefits package, including 22 vacation days per year.
