Postdoc in middle atmosphere modelling at British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, UK

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, UK, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

In light of the growing need to better understand climate change, stratosphere-troposphere coupling emerges as one of the key research topics. It is known that such coupling is highly sensitive to external forcing. Apart from human enhancement of the greenhouse effect, solar forcing is one large-scale external forcing that our climate system might sensitively respond to. The aim is to determine how atmospheric dynamics may respond to variability and change caused by multiple solar inputs using a simple atmospheric General Circulation Model (GCM). The job involves comprehensive examination of model outputs in order to understand the interactions between dynamics, radiative balance, atmospheric wave activity and chemistry within the stratosphere and troposphere. The successful candidate will conduct research by running a simple GCM under various solar forcing scenarios; analysing atmospheric responses in terms of eddy/wave activity and changes in mean flow and temperature; interpreting modelled outputs and generating high-level publishable research outcomes. A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or a closely related field, with experience in running GCMs, coding computer programming in a UNIX/LINUX environment, and using data analysis tools like Matlab or IDL is preferred.
