Postdoc in MLT Chemistry at AFRL, Hanscom AFB, MA

A Post-Doctoral position in Theoretical Chemistry is available at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Hanscom Air Force Base, 15 miles northwest of Boston, Massachusetts. The NASA funded research involves modeling the chemical and physical processes taking place in the terrestrial mesosphere and thermosphere. The research focuses on understanding how the energy from the solar wind is transferred to the atmosphere and once transferred how it is dissipated. The work would involve calculating the formation and quenching mechanisms of key infrared emitting species in the upper atmosphere and comparing the calculated radiative cooling with that observed by the instruments aboard NASA's and ESA's (European Space Agency) satellites. The work would also involve working interactively with the General Circulation Model (GCM) atmospheres which would be input to the codes calculating the radiative cooling. The research grant requires that the results be presented at the scientific conferences and published in the open literature.

The suitable applicant should be a prospective or recent PhD and a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder. The position, with competitive salary, is nominally for one year, although it is typically extended to two years contingent on mutual agreement. Interested persons please contact Dr. Ramesh Sharma (781.377.4198, ramesh.sharma@hanscom.af.mil) to request further information and PDF copies of recent publications.
