Space Weather Research Positions at the Air Force Research Laboratory (Restricted to US citizens)
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Weather Center of Excellence anticipates opening several engineers and research physicist positions in the general area of Space Sciences. More specifically, we anticipate the need for research personnel in all aspects of space weather: the Sun and solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere and thermosphere. These civil service positions are anticipated from now and until 2013. They will be restricted to US citizens.
The Space Weather Center of Excellence is presently located at Hanscom Air Force Base, near Boston, MA. Under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) decision in 2005, this division will move to Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM by 2011. Candidates hired before 2011 should be willing to relocate from Massachusetts to New Mexico in this time frame. However, it might be possible for some to be hired in Albuquerque directly.
Candidates should be familiar with the analysis of ground and satellite space environment data, have a strong modeling experience, or have expertise in designing and building instrumentation for space environmental sensing. In particular, it is expected that positions in the following three areas will be open in the near future: numerical ionospheric modeling, data analysis related to magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere coupling processes, and satellite sensor development.
Successful applicants will have demonstrated skills in creativity, leadership, and communication; they should be highly dedicated and able to work in a team environment.
Positions will be open for applicants with Bachelors, Masters or PhD degrees in space sciences or related field. Some Post Doctoral positions might also be open. Salaries will be commensurate with experience.
Informal inquiries may be made or preliminary resumes sent to Dr. Joel Mozer (Joel.Mozer@hanscom.af.mil).
