Description
The RAIDS experiment on the ISS has provided a new observational dataset of temperatures and composition measurements from the mesopause to 160 km. Temperatures across the 100-200 km altitude range are difficult and have been sparsely sampled due to experimental and mission limitations. The ability of the RAIDS experiment to provide temperature profiles allows a unique opportunity to explore the dynamics of this region. RAIDS nitric oxide observations enable the study of composition changes in response to energetic processes such as Joule heating, which can be inferred from ground-based radar observations. Combining these type of space-based observations with other ground-based measurements will provide a more complete and detailed view of this region. This workshop’s focus is 1) to present satellite and ground-based observations of temperature and composition between the mesopause and 200 km, 2) compare the observations with current model predictions to improve our understanding of the region, and 3) foster future collaboration between space- and ground-based sensor teams to enhance the understanding of the MLT.
