Description
The general introduction to the workshop is: Planning constellations of Cubesats to contribute to problem solving requires careful planning. Early constellations must also be balanced with the practicality of implementation. The workshop is directed to 1) identifying scientific problems well suited to constellations (individual presentations) 2) satellites and infrastructure require to address the problems, 3) methods of organization of the process to implement the process (panel).
(45 minutes—Phase 1) To make a long story short, we are planning to have a three phase workshop. Phase 1 would address Cubesats with descriptions of some general engineering constraints to set the stage for mission planning including especially 1) Cubesat capabilities as a bus and attitude control (Chad Fish, SDL), 2) Communication, especially downlink bandwidths constraining instrumentation and/or sampling rates (Charles Swenson, SDL), and 3) Launch capabilities emerging (TBD).
(30 minutes—Phase 2) The second phase would be to review some existing plans by others, especially the USAF so that we don’t duplicate missions planned by others. We invite Odile De La Beaujardiere to discuss SSAEM, and DMSP. Erik Sutton will discuss the AF Cubsat program. (15 minutes for Odile and Erik and 15 minutes for audience contributions—including COSMIC, COSMIC follow on)
(45 Minutes- Phase 3) This phase is a panel discussion of science priorities to be addressed with constellation missions, as well as methodology suggestions to institute science planning with NSF—i.e. Mission planning panel?
