Ionosphere Mesosphere Polar Aeronomy Campaign (IMPAC) 2009

Introduction

With imminent arrival of the Advanced Modula Incoherent Scatter Radar (AMISR) at Resolute, polar aeronomy will enter a new era with more powerful observation capability. The Resolute AMISR will enable new observations of the polar ionosphere and thermosphere to address many pressing issues related to the thermosphere-ionosphere interaction and ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling. Optical observations will be an important of part of future collaborative research. While ISR has more centralized operation and data processing, optical observations are more distributed and decentralized. To facilitate future joint research effort and lay a foundation, we organize this optical observation campaign to build an organizational infrastructure.

To begin with, we build this wiki web to allow investigators to contribute their analysis and data plots. We have selected a few time periods during the 2008/2009 northern winter season for analysis. The one criterion is for a small substorm. Other possibility may be the stratospheric warming event started in later January 2009 and is still ongoing at the time we created this page. We also plan to provide TIEGCM model results for comparison with observations.

We expect all participants will follow rule of road of the CEDAR database, when using others data for their research.

We are organizing a CEDAR workshop to discuss our research results on the following selected time periods. The CEDAR workshop is to be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico from June 28 to July 2, 2009. Everyone interested is welcome to participate and contribute to our discussion.
