New Atmospheric Networks: The Axonmet and O-QNet (W. Hocking, Fri 20 June 2008)
Two new networks have recently been established that may be of interest to members of Cedar. The first, AxonMet, stands for Cross(X)-Americas Observing network for Meteors, and the second is the Ontario-Quebec Profiler network. The first is a network of meteor radars, stretching from Antarctica to 80 degrees north (almost pole to pole), and containing over 15 radars. The instruments are all SKiYMet radars, common in design, built by the same supplier, and owned by various users, including operators from the Cedar community, Canada and scientists in South America. Data are updated several times per day on the world-wide-web, and should be useful background information for any mesospheric experiments carried out anywhere in North or South America and Antarctica by members of Cedar.
The O-QNet will contain about 10 closely spaced profiler radars covering much of Ontario and part of Quebec, and will be able to monitor gravity wave production, jet stream movements, fronto-genesis, and a variety of atmospheric phenomena. It is partly complete already. Real-time examples of data from each network will be shown.
